InferCabulary was designed to enhance vocabulary learning by simulating the type of word learning which typically occurs through extensive reading and exposure to sophisticated spoken language (i.e., lexical inferencing).
Unlike traditional methods that focus on direct definitions, InferCabulary has two key features:
1. Dual coding; presenting vocabulary in a way that combines visual and verbal information, making it more effective for abstract, nuanced, and academic words.
2. It introduces these vocabulary encounters simultaneously, encouraging students to engage in the same deductive and inductive reasoning processes used in lexical inferencing. We refer to this as semantic reasoning.
This approach results in students taking an active role in deriving meanings by identifying the common elements across different examples.
These articles contain some of the research showing the impact of semantic reasoning via InferCabulary.

InferCabulary can be used by students independently or teachers can use it in direct instruction.
